CHAPTER 22

“As soon as Grey sent out the distress call, Sol and I herded Lady Morin and Sir Arcaro into a safe room. Sol stayed with them,” Saro told Caldera. “I ran outside to find everything destroyed.”

Caldera tried to imagine Saro stepping out into the decimated courtyard. The gardens that he and his brother had patrolled for years, gone. The emptiness in her heart was the only thing to greet her.

“Send me the footage,” Caldera demanded of Grey. Newly released from the hospital, she stood in the doorway to her quarters, hand outstretched toward the red-haired man in front of her. “I know your ship’s external cameras caught everything as you flew away.”

Grey nodded as Sear, Aloriea, and Markarian crowded in around him. “Y—yes, of course. I just wanted to personally thank you—”

“The footage. Now…please.”

“I do not think that is a good idea,” Sear said from behind Grey, his ears lying flat against the top of his head, his golden eyes filled with sorrow.

Caldera ignored him. “As queen, I command you,” she said, her voice low and flat.

Grey nodded, holding out the holopad, hands shaking.

“Callie!” Aloriea called, right as the door whooshed between them.

Caldera quickly locked it so no one could enter.

She walked to the bathroom, the holopad trembling in her hands, and opened the video. Sitting down next to the toilet, she hit play. The quality was crystal clear. She could zoom in as close as she wanted, and it wouldn’t pixelate—the perks of a top-of-the-line Vanguard explorer-class ship. There was no sound, but she didn’t need it—she could still hear everything clearly.

They were there, the three of them. Olivare had just stood up after trying to choke her to death, and was walking toward Rennick. Then they were floating, lifted off the ground seemingly by nothing—Olivare had already been sucked in. Then she was sitting on the ground, and Rennick was gone.

Opening a new program, she scanned the planet for Rennick’s vitals. It came up blank after a few minutes. Her eyes blurred as her stomach rolled once. Her head was in the bowl, vomiting up the contents of her stomach, the holopad clicking against the marble floor where she dropped it. She took a deep breath, wiping her mouth with her sleeve, then picked up the holopad and hit rewind.
